Encounter at Sea #1: Dilemma at Croy!

The sun sets as the Dragon boat sails into TInker cove on the southern coast of Croy Isle. The first thing you note is the great Rune Arch that spans the entrance of the cove, you are also surprised at the number of ships that are not only docked here, but the unusual amount that are also anchored just off shoe as well. The crews of many ships hail you as you pass them, "Haloo Heroes!", "It's them! It's them!!", "Save Modron!".

The port is bustling with activity and you actually have to wait to dock for about an hour, as other merchant craft clear away. Upon docking the Port Master states that you must resupply and ship out in 2 hours since you have no cargo to unload. If you plan to stay any length of time you must anchor offshore and use a smaller boat to ferry crew back and forth or hire one of the many lads with a dingy to do so for you. The docking fee is 10 ten gold coins payable now.

"Two hours should be more than enough time to get what we need." says Hookah, " Our problem may be cost, I've never seen so much activity here before."

"Port Master, why are there so many ships here?" asks Alexander stepping onto the dock.

"Most of the ships are waiting to sail on to Modron, the lot anchored offshore have arrived from there earlier today. Story is a curse has been laid upon the city and its destruction looms near! I heard tell that the Heroes of Eros are even now at sea looking to prevent this terrible thing from happening."

The Port Master suddenly steps back as he looks at Alexander, then sweeps his gaze across the rest of the party. " A young Wizard, a white-haired Elf girl, the Scarlet Tiger, a cunning Rogue, Mesha's chosen, Lars the Shark, the Iron Chef Moep, the Hawkswood Trio minus one, and assorted henchmen...... I.... it's YOU!" Taking two steps backwards he cries, "By the pruned balls of Trameron! The Heroes of Eros have landed in Tinker Cove!"

Everyone in earshot turns to see what the Dock Master is yelling about. Then as if someone set a torch to a puddle of oil, the fact that the Heroes of Eros have landed in Croy blazes across the docks. Within minutes a group of heavily armed Skandiks arrive and shove their way to you past the crowd that has gathered.

"I am Onrei," says a tall blonde shield Maiden, "Captain of Croy's battle fleet. Jarl Melrik requests you join him for audience. The Royal Guard are here to escort you all forthwith."

Leaving Gilligan and Farhoud with the boat everyone else goes to meet the Jarl in his fortress. Walking through the streets you are greeted with much enthusiastic praise as well as a few stares and looks of suspicion. Soon you all find yourselves in a great Mead hall standing in front of Jarl Melrik himself.

"Greetings Heroes of Eros and welcome to Croy." the warrior-king looks over the group. Neither young nor too old the Jarl of Croy is obviously not a man to be toyed with.

"It seems the Fates have smiled upon me at last. As you MUST know by now the news of Modron's plight has preceded you here by only a few hours. Three days ago, my Sorceress had a vision that an opportunity of great value would present itself to me. I believe you are that opportunity. You need supplies to carry on and save Modron. I have these things and could ask a hefty ransom for them. I also in my own way, hope you fail in this endeavor. I will not bar you from completing your quest as long as you give me what I want. In return your boat will be supplied and you may leave as wish, or stay till dawn."

"What do you wish of the Heroes, my Lord? If it is our aid in some manner we will gladly give you a discounted rate, but only after we complete our quest for the Sea-Queen and fair Modron."  says Lars, calculating with his mental abacus how much he may be able to gain from the coffers of Croy.

Standing, Melrik motions to his left and a blonde woman steps out from a hidden alcove. "Cannar! Do they still have it? I don't see the man you described amongst them."
"They do my lord, the reek of it permeates them all." Her eyes glow with a soft golden flicker, as the Sorceress slowly circles the party. "There are even those among them who would be glad to be rid of it."

"If you have not guessed by now what it is I seek from you, then I shall name it!" The Skandik Jarl towers over you like a giant, his ice blue eyes piercing you like a spear.

"Give me the Axe of Felan, and I will see you supplied and on your way. Refuse me, and you will be my guests as Modron falls into the sea and Croy becomes the greatest sea port in the Wilderlands."

Returning to his throne the Jarl tips a goblet of wine to his mouth then looks back upon the group, "I await your answer...."

DM: after hearing what you all have to say (your comments below), the Jarl rises from his chair and approaches Tyrrian.

"Young Tiger, I do not fear Sashu's gaze upon my actions. Your courage to speak plainly to me is noted." The big man places his hand on the warriors shoulder and nods to him knowingly. Turning then towards the rest of the party he raises his thick arms to the air and bellows, " IMAGINE yourself with this WEAPON!" Then drawing a stony gaze upon Alexander he continues, " Only a FOOL or a small minded peasant would believe that Felan's Axe will bring one respect and stature among his peers. You seek I think to stoke the flames of ego which do not burn here. Oh you are correct that one will get much treasure, tithe and conquest from its use. Only from those who fear you, and those who would seek to usurp you, while blood stains your hands at the behest of the Lords of Chaos!"

"You ask me to REWARD you! When I should have you all killed for unearthing it in the first place. But, I excuse your ignorance , for how could you have known what it truly was." The Skandik King turns to face Lars and Sally.

"As for my generosity, you witness it first hand. My harbor and coast brim with the refugees of Modron, as well as those ships that would have sailed unknowingly into that coming danger had my people not warned all the sea captains once we heard the news. I'm sorry to tell you Bard, but the fate of Modron lies squareley upon the shoulders of you Heroes of Eros. You chose to champion those people, not I."

Once again Melrik ascends the steps to his throne and turns to face you all. " I want the Axe to destroy it! As should have been done long ago, without it both Chaos and Law lose the chance to embroil us in their endless war. I offer you participation in the rite of destruction after which you may leave Croy with supplies to see you through your quest. Or you can refuse me and go as you came here. The decision is yours."

Cannar responds to Sally, "Little sister, the Jarl can himself get a bit zealous. Though Trameron is our chief diety, Mesha holds sway here as well. You are welcome to commune with her in the Temple of Trees."

"Come Heroes, join me for food and drink! Help me settle my mood and cut through the tensions I have raised. Cannar, take the priestess to the Temple and we will await her return." The Jarl signals and tables are set with food an drink.

"You lot are a bit opportunistic, but I suppose that is to be expected. I had to push you to see where your hearts lie, I needed to understand how deep of a hold the AXE had upon you. As for how one disposes of such a thing, well my little friend. That takes something special, something I have that came to me from the far north. It was discovered buried in the great glacier near Valon. Have you ever heard of the ancient Hyperzephyrians and the fabled Fire Lance?" Melrik eyes you all from the rim of his mead horn, "I possess one and will use it tonight in concert with Cannar's spells and you shall be witness to a rite that has not been performed in a thousand thousand years! That is, as long as your Priestess agrees when she returns from her commune with the Goddess."

DM: Sally soon returned from the Temple of Trees, she agreed to let the Axe of Felan be destroyed. With great haste the Jarl led all those present to a ring of standing stones on the cliffs overlooking the sea. They watched as Cannar the Sorceress started an hour long ritual that began drawing down lightning to the stones. Nearing the rituals completion, the Jarl asked that Sally and Tyrrian place the Axe upon the center stone. As our two heroes complied a long thin ornate coffer was brought to Melrik. He opened it and revealed the ancient Fire Lance. The twelve foot long weapon seemed to be cast from mother of pearl and fitted with
pure silver connectors, it was also inset with dark rubies the size of Moep's fists. The Jarl lifted it from the coffer and was able to grip by a handle much like that of a crossbow. A long flexible pipe of unknown manufacture dropped from the base of the grip and its end was placed in the center of specially prepared mystic circle. Asking everyone to stand well behind him, the Jarl aimed the lance into the air above the Axe. Then calling out in unison with Cannar to the Sea God Trameon, the Celestial Arishem and the Great Balance a bolt of white coruscating energy tore into the sky! The stones themselves were feeding the lightning they had into the sky as well now and a great tear opened in reality, through this hole reached a crimson hand that had a span of at least 100 feet. The great hand reached down and plucked the Axe from the stone altar and it instantly began to turn white hot and melt in the entities grip. The chaos forged metal steamed away into nothingness and a clap of thunder so powerful it knocked everyone off their feet concluded the night!

  3. Jarl, no disrespect, and I do not speak for all of the Heroes and Eros, only for myself, but I must make you aware that the axe is a cursed item, that brings nothing but tragedy to those that wield it. While I for one do wish to see it gone, I feel it is safer to know where it is and to protect it from falling into the wrong hands. For I have seen firsthand the abilities of this axe and the sway it has opver people, especially weak willed people.

Therefore, it is my duty to let you know that regardless of the outcome of this negotiation, should you or anyone else other than the Heroes of Eros take possession of Felan's Axe, I will have eyes on that individual. If it comes to my attention that the individual has used the Axe for evil, whether of their own free will or that of the axe's, I swear by Sashu's Holy Sword of Judgement that Justice will be swift. Just because Justice is blind, does not mean that it does not see, nor does it forget...

  4. At that momemt, Tarek steps up and cuts off his young friend

Tarek: (Stepping in front of Tyrrian and motioning for him to stop speaking. With a slight bow, Tarek begings speaking, in Skandik only)

Great Jarl, please forgive the stubbornness of my comrade. He can get a bit zealous at times, but means no disrespect - he has only good intentions, sometimes, too good.

Let me state that what your Sorceress says is all true - we are in possession of Felan's Axe, and there are those of us that wish to see it gone, because it is a vile, cursed object.

However, as I see it, we should be able to come to a more mutually benficial outcome. Let me propose a counter offer. It appears to me that an item with as much power as Felan's Axe should command a higher price than simply a week or two worth of rations and your permission to sail off to almost certain doom.

Frankly, not all of us Heroes of Eros are as zealous or dedicated to causes as others (Tarek's motions to Tyrrian). Many of us serve only one cause, ourselves. Now it appears as though your mighty port city has excess capacity, and you have stated your desire to see Modron's demise so that Croy may benefit, and I can't say that I fault you for that. So I will will now be honest - Modron, in itself, is actually meaningless for most of us. We were only undergoing this quest for the potential riches that lie undiscovered or unclaimed. In my opinion, one port city is just as good as another port city, whether it be Modron or Croy.

Therefore, if you want Felan's Axe, I suggest you offer more to the entire Heroes of Eros, other than just rations and permission to leave. Most of the group wouldn't even be going if there wasn't an allure of treasure - only one (motioning to Tyrrian again) cares about some "greater good".

So, since I have had the pleasure of being a guest of a Jarl in the past, I am providing you this little bit of advice in negotiating with the Heroes of Eros.

I for one am more than happy to get rid of that damned Axe - for the right price...

  6. Tarek strolls over to Chi and motions for Alexander to join him.

(In a whispered voice) Chi, if things go south and we get stuck here, you may have to "Summon the Dude". If we get stuck, you will need to summon some type of creature, perhaps a bird, that can deliver a message to the crew on the ship to pull anchor and sail for the northern shore of the island - without supplies.

Alexander, if thuis has to happen, is there a way you can provide the needed message so that Capt. Hook and Faroud would know it comes from you and are "official orders"?

If we get stuck here, our only shot may be to escape and make for the northern coast, which is less mountaines and rocky, and may provide a easier place for the ship to temporarily anchor or beach for us to board and escape.

    1. Alexander: I can move the boat by mental commands. With a thought I can row to the desired locations.

Lars: I think we should try and talk our way into his good graces and out of the city. The loss of this axe is not so large to most of us.

    3. Sally: (in a quiet, small voice)I brought this axe out of the vault tomb and it is my responsibility. I came off my family farm to wrestle fellow villagers from the grip of foul man-beasts. I devled deep into castle, tomb, starless sea, and ziggurat volcano. I carry many items used by the forces of chaos and none have presented as evil to my magical divinations.

If any could rightfully claim the axe as their own, I could since I brought it back into the world since it was now in season again.

I must commune with with Mesha and hear her wisdom about what actions I should take on her behalf.

As I can not fathom the wisdom of preventing my fellows from trying to go a far greater good by rescuing a neighboring city from a horrible, cursed fate in order to effectively force us to allow you to tip the balance by destroying something just because you oppose it's legacy.

I am just a young farm girl trying to save the world. I may be a follower of a chaotic godess, but I have done many laudable deeds in Her name and saved many lives. What real consequence is preventing us from our task? Why would you offer us such a choice? Give up an item or watch a city perish? Where is the justice and law in that? Giving us no real choice really?

Tell me Mesha what season shall we celebrate in this fair, just, legal, and generous choice today?
I am far to unwise to make this decision on my own!

  8. A great prize indeed. Many Jarl's seek it. For one to desire it over the riches his city earn if Modron falls into the sea it must fetch a high price indeed. If you desire an item rather than see Croy become the greatest sea port in the Wilderlands, I must agree with my friends it is surely worth more than bread and water!

"Give me the Axe of Felan, and I will see you supplied and on your way. Refuse me, and you will be my guests as Modron falls into the sea and Croy becomes the greatest sea port in the Wilderlands."

Imagine yourself, great Jarl Melrik, with this weapon! The power and respect a man of your stature wielding a weapon with such a gloriously and vicious history. All the tribute, tithes, treasure. Imagine the conquests of those in fear of your power as you wield it. Many would follow such a great leader.

We know full well what this weapon can do and have witnessed the power it can bestow on a man with the will to wield it. Many risked their lives to use it. We have risked our lives to keep it many a time. What is our reward to be? What is it worth to you great Jarl?

  9. I have heard this powerful axe called a cursed weapon, yet I have wielded it and carried it into battle with no ill effects. Truly I can tell you of the great power I have felt first hand. Sally has carried into battle and suffered not a bit. Many things of power come at a cost. This is no different.

I travel to the Lone Ait on a mission to recover lost magic and riches. I have no ties to this city or Modron. If the great Jarl wishes me as his guest, I could not ask for a better host. I could also ask why would the Jarl not want the Axe or for Croy to become the greatest port? You could have both for a fair price if you have the desire and do not care what the historians would say as they sang of your greatness?

I say a rich and powerful man such as yourself knows what this weapon of great power and name could vastly increase his own legend and status. Why I hardly suspect you would even need to use it to come to better terms with the Ossary. The respect it could gain you must be immeasurable. The freedom that kind of respect and power could carry a man’s name and legend across the world.

Surely the great Jarl Melrik has something in his trove to help our little band on it’s way feeling like we gained a powerful ally and a fair trade to boot? I could hear the stories now spreading far and wide of your greatness and magnanimous generosity assisting your neighbor city port. The salvation of Modron is at hand and really YOU control that cities fate. What say you Jarl?

  10. (After a moment of whispering between Tyrrian and Tarek)

Jarl Melrik, I believe your intentions are true and that you seek only to rid the world of the foul weapon, so even though I am only one of many voices, I support your request for the axe to destroy it and furthermore, will lend my aid, if needed, in that task, once I do my best to save the innocent people of Modron. If you do not require my assistance, then may Sashu be with you and may the Rule of Law continue to shine down and guide you.

    1. Tarek (in Skandik): Jarl Melrik, your offer is agreeable and my friend deems your intentions true, as do I. Please forgive my earlier attempts at barter, fore I assumed you sought the axe to wield. I assumed wrong and I apologize.

You do your people's name well. Please understand that my previous dealings with Jarls to the south have not been of the same caliber, and I pressed for a better deal out of the belief you sought the axe as a personal weapon, and not to destroy it as it needs to be.

In honesty, my comrade, the Tiger, and I have contemplated liberating the axe and sending it to the deep, cold depths of Davie Jones' Locker to keep it out of anyone's hands. The only thing that prevented us from getting rid of it was that it was in the possession of our friends, and we could not rightly take from our friends, even for the best reasons.

I stand with my "brother" the Tiger and vote to provide you the axe, if you are able to destroy it, with no preconditions.

Tarek (Switching back to Tharbrian): I vote we give the axe to the Jarl and bid him Good Luck in his endeavor to destroy the vile cursed Axe!

  11. FOOL or a small minded peasant I may be. I have far many less years and not quite the beard of wisdom. Many pay respect to kings in word or deed. I fear I may have offended you with my words and actions. I am a small minded peasant who until only yesterday wore burnt, torn, and tattered rags for months leading my friends from our ruined village of eros, into a keep filled with many Man-beasts, down into the earth, and across a subterranean lake filled with sea creatures to face the forces of chaos. We saved many small minded peasants and lost many friends.

We travelled through the wild lands and into the portal under the stars. We faced an army and many dark magics.

We faced the evil cultists of the pit. We over came them. We saved that town as well.

We faced the evils of Tegel Manor.

We crushed the emerald enchanter who was performing many evil experiments on dozens of victims. We rescued many and crushed his lair.

We defeated a group of evil sea people and a monsterous sea beast. We rushed off to save another city from the same fate as our home Eros.

My mind is small. I think only of my group and how we can keep going from place to place to place trying to prevent the same tragedy that happened to our small home.

This axe means nothing to me more than what it is worth to me and mine. I feel no shame in asking you what it is worth to you or trying to use my simple words to get the best possible deal when you offered your original terms to our group of heroes.

What say the rest of you?
