DCC Chapter 1: Sailors on the Starless Sea

This game took place Aug. 10th 2012.

I ran the Zero level adventure: DCC #67 Sailors on the Starless Sea
I had 7 players running 3 zero level characters apiece. Our group started as quite the motley band of peasants. Here they are listed by Player, then characters.

Brian: Sven the Duck Herder, Bull Zi the Jester, Dragona halfling vagrant.

Shawn: Tyrrian the Blacksmith, Dirk the Hunter, Tom the Radish Farmer.

John: Lars the Smuggler, Alexander the Apprentice, Fiery Sally the Rutabaga Farmer

Selina: Emily the Parsnip farmer, Alan the cutpurse, Chi the elf forester

Greg: Alandra Moonstaff elf Artisan, Jonathan Beavis a Monk (Name of the Rose style), Garrotte Denslinger halfling gypsy

Buck: Dodge the caravan guard, Brewster the Alchemist, Calis the elf forester.

Cary: Obama the indentured servant, Morisa elf Sage, John Paul the weaver.

*Note* I decide to not allow duplicate starting occupations except for Farmer, Herder and Demi-humans. I also decided the first player to roll the Blacksmith would be directly related to the Blacksmiths in the adventure. Since Shawn rolled a 7 for Strength he made Tyrrian the youngest son of the Blacksmith family.

The Monk was a variation on the Herbalist Occupation, as I wanted a spiritual center for the group. Greg decided his pound of Herbs were actually hops as Jonathan was learning Brewing at the Monastery.

I read the following aloud to the group:
"What started with a missing child, has grown progressively worse in the past weeks. Now entire families have gone missing from ravaged farmsteads. Messengers sent for aid have not returned!!
Last night however foreshadows that the worst is yet to come. Man beasts attacked the village proper, wounding many and carrying off at least thirty of your friends and family. You can no longer wait for the Duke to send aid. Gathering your meager tools and gear you few band together to save your people."

I then started with the group assembled at the path just outside the old fort near the bramble patch.

*In the excitement of starting play, I forgot to give out a rumor to each player!!!

More in the next post.

  1. This is a great idea. I had a blast playing and am looking forward to the next session. Tyrrian the Blacksmith and Tom the Radish Farmer will be ready for the next adventure, along with Tarek the Rutabaga Farmer.

    1. However, I forgot to mention that next time, it will most likely be Tyrrian the Fighter, Tarek the Thief, and Tom the Cleric of (something). Of course, Tom will keep Bessy the pig with him, and will punish anything that looks at Bessy the wrong way...

    2. Wow, Tyrrian the fighter and Tom the Cleric. I will send you some choices for Gods to choose from.

    3. Yeah, I thought about it, and even though Tom was able to hold his own, his Agility, HP, and Stamina do not lend themselves well to a front-line fighter. Since he has an average Strength and high Personality, he would make a better cleric providing support and punishment for all those that look at Bessy wrong. Also, being that he's Neutral, he may have a better chance supporting both the Lawfuls and Chaotics in the group.

Tyrrian has a low Strength, but good Agility and Stamina, so he will make a good Fighter, eventually. He'll jsut have to quest for higher strength, at least high enough to do away with the penalty. I figure he will make a good agile fighter that relies more on light armor than on carrying heavy armor. Plus, he has his heirloom weapons and lucky hammer.

Tarek has good Agility and a great Luck, so he would make a natural Thief. Plus, he was not so good in the fights with his spear.

    1. Excerpt from the journal of Alexander the magnificent:
"Lost at sea day two, only the gulls and this sailor moon boy allen for company. If we can't kill a bird with this longbow soon poor allen may die. We defeated the man-beasts with minimal losses of my followers, but my flock may not survive without me to lead them to victory and safety. This vessel is not easy to control and I hope I discover the secrets to all it's uses via magical research and luck."

    1. I have lead my caravan to victory and the rock continues to have many uses. I should sell these "pet rocks" and increase revenue. I attempted to keep my underlings in line and had to admonish them on free lance door opening! I hope they can learn. These farmers are turning from rabble into a well oiled machine slowly,so slowly.
