Wine Cellars: Marqest town proper

The town of Marqest lies about 2 miles south of the ruins of the castle from which it takes its name. There would seem to be little reason to visit this place for most normal people, however it draws a great number of both adventurers and miscreants due to the rumors of plentiful treasures hidden in the cellars of the Duke. Much to the consternation of the locals but to the gain of the town's businesses the Mayor makes great allowances for brisk trade and shady dealings. Of note there is no official Watch or Law enforcement in town, the locals and adventurers who base themselves here will come together and drive out or get rid of any who become too troublesome.

Town of Marqest
The following establishments are of note to those who arrive in Marqest proper:

The Dog-N-Bone (Tavern/Brewery)
The proprietor of the place is an older man known only as Fernand. He has always been here and likely knows many rumors about the castle and adventurers passing through. The famous Flaming Green-Skeleton can be found here as well as the Adventurers Leader-board. The Tavern is known for the greatest amount of carousing that goes on in Marqest proper and is held in high regard by all adventurers who come here.

Marqest Town Hall
This well kept building is the center of any "official" town business, as well as the home of all the property records and familia registries etc. The basement is home to the town's jail and is kept in use mostly for carousers that get out of hand and the usual debtors that owe to much money.
Mayor Richard Justin Saint-Egreve has been in charge for many years and the people seem satisfied with his work. As long as the gold and treasures retrieved from the castle flow through the town and no one pushes their luck too far the Mayor is willing to overlook a lot.

The Church of Saint Baldric of the Liminal Eye
Father Brenard oversees worship services at this simple gothic church. He friendly with those who would do good and put right the wrongs done by the Duke and his minions. Brenard is helped out by a retired adventuring Cleric, Father Liam O'shea that can be found often at the Dog-n-bone.

The Tap (seedy tavern)
A less reputable establishment on the outskirt of town, is known for a shadier type of cliental. The proprietor Pascal is said to have contacts with various "guilds".

The House of Madame Polidori
A very fine establishment dedicated to the ...."arts". The Madame is known to have an interest in playbooks, sheet music and other items of artful nature that are brought out of the castle.

Hospice of the Sisters of Saint Boniface of the three Testaments

A half dozen  nuns overseen by Reverend Mother Geraldina, administer this refuge for healing of long and short term ailments. Although admittance is free, donations are welcome.

Curios, Antiques & Fortunes
This ramshackle building is stocked with all manner of odd junk and one never knows what may be found. Mordechai the owner employs two strapping lads Simon and Jacob to discourage chicanery. For a nominal fee his daughter Celestina will read your fortune.

The Blacksmith
Erwin the blacksmith is a capable man and can be contracted to repair armor and make arrow and spear tips. He is not however and armor or weapon smith and the creation of suits of armour, shields and weapons of battle quality are beyond him.

There are more locations in the town as well as a Market square where twice a month merchants arrive from out of town to do business. The locations noted above are the most notable to Adventurers who are operating out of the town for forays to the Castle.

Wine Cellars: Legend & Lore

Jaelle the Disinherited and the magical blade Fang.

It is said that Jaelle was a prince of some far off elven kingdom. Who had somehow gained the title of

Jaelle

Disinherited. How this came to be is lost to time and most don't care to even wonder. What we do know is that Jaelle adventured abroad and was known to wield a particular magical blade called simply "Fang".

It is believed that this blade was a treasure of the serpent-men of the Ghost archipelago found somewhere in the Sea of Dread far to the south. The blade is identifiable by its snake headed hilt and the faint green glow that emanates from the blade when it is close proximity to snakes. Some tales relate that the wielder of Fang could communicate with snakes though no proof of this has been corroborated. Jaelle was said to be able to transform himself into a snake while in possession of Fang, though this is unproven as well since the Elf was also a known practitioner of nature magic.

It has been at least fifty years since any new tales of Jaelle have graced the songs of the bards, and many believe he finally returned home to claim his kingdom. A tale or really more of a rumor that does persist though, is that of hooded members of snake-cults seeking information on the location of Jaelle and Fang.
